Round and about

Orkney offers a wealth of attractions, whatever your interests – island-hopping, birds, wild flowers, diving, fishing, visiting historic sites, crafts or just enjoying the beautiful beaches and wide skies. From St Margaret’s Hope you can drive, via the Churchill Barriers, to anywhere on Orkney Mainland within an hour. There are regular ferries from Kirkwall and Houton to the north and south isles (you can take the car too), making them accessible for day trips. Or stay in South Ronaldsay to explore the beaches and cliffs, follow the craft trail or visit the Marine Life Centre, Tomb of the Eagles and Mowatts Smithy. The annual Festival of the Horse and Boys’ Ploughing Match in August is a unique event full of colour and interest.

St Margaret’s Hope itself is a charming village, a thriving commercial centre before the Churchill Barriers were constructed. Now the Pentland Ferries service from Gills Bay comes in to the pier and Kirkwall (and the islands’ main shopping centre) is within easy reach by car or bus.

In the village there are many services and amenities. Just along Front Road is the award-winning Creel Restaurant and Rooms run by Alan and Joyce Craigie. Nearer at hand is The Galley Inn pub and restaurant offering a more informal meal. In Back Road there are a tearoom and a new bistro.

The South Ronaldsay Golf Club has a 9-hole course and welcomes visiting players, including juniors. There are also bowls and tennis clubs in School Road.

There are three stores in the village. Once is also an off-licence and Post Office with ATM. Daily newspapers are available from here (including on Sundays). The Craft Workshop and Loft Gallery are at the front of Leiths. The Loft Gallery mounts several exhibitions a year. There is also a doctor's surgery in the village.
